Shown above is the homestead of Jim and Thelma Songer in the late fifties. They came from Riverhurst, Saskatchewan in 1951 to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. They milked cows, raised pigs and ran a herd of commercial Hereford-Shorthorn cows. The dairy herd was sold in 1967 and the first purebred Herefords were purchased in the early 1970s. Shorthorns were added in 1999 with the purchase of a purebred heifer from Bill & Edith Boake of Acme, Alberta. Our family ties to Shorthorn cattle go back to the 1870's when Joseph Parkinson, Sally's great-great grandfather, bred the first cow to enter the Canadian Shorthorn Herd Book, a roan female known as Ada.
