At Lucky Springs Farms, our herd consists of two purebred herds: Hereford and Shorthorn, as well as a herd of commercial Hereford/Shorthorn cows. Our herd sires of both breeds are bred to be predictable and functional. Fertility is high on our list of priorities. We limit our breeding season to 42 days by AI’ing for the first cycle and then turning out clean-up bulls for the next three weeks. Our calving season is 90% complete in the first 21 days. Uniformity and retail product are also important to us. We use ultrasound data to evaluate the carcass quality of our genetics. We are proud to have bred and exhibited both the 2005 Grand Champion Carcass and the 2006 Reserve Grand Champion Carcass at the Calgary Stampede.
